Understanding Edmonton weather

Edmonton has one of the widest annual temperature ranges of any major Canadian city — long, cold winters and short, warm summers. Below is a plain-language primer for newcomers, in Ukrainian and English.

Seasons at a glance

Winter (Dec–Mar)

Daytime highs usually −5 to −15°C. Cold snaps can drop to −30°C or colder for a few days. Days are short — sunset before 5 pm in December.

Spring (Apr–May)

Snow melts through April. Highs climb from 5 to 15°C. Late-season snow squalls happen — don't put away winter tires until May.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Warm and dry — highs 20 to 28°C, sometimes 30°C+. Long daylight (sunset near 10 pm in June). Thunderstorms in July.

Fall (Sep–Nov)

Beautiful in September; snow can arrive in October. By November highs drop below freezing.

Wind chill vs actual temperature

Environment Canada reports wind chill ("feels like") separately from the actual air temperature. At −20°C with a light wind, exposed skin can feel like −30°C. Dress for the wind chill number.

First-winter checklist for newcomers

  • Parka rated to −30°C (down or synthetic).
  • Insulated waterproof boots.
  • Toque, thick gloves or mittens, neck warmer.
  • Thermal base layer (merino or synthetic — avoid cotton).
  • Winter tires from November to April (legally required for many mountain trips, essential in Edmonton).
